IAA president Dharmadi told local media in Jakarta this was part of the airline's regional strategy and in line with AirAsia Malaysia's vision to be a key player in South-east Asia.
"This is also in line with the Indonesian government's suggestion for us to focus on regional services," Dharmadi added.
As a result, IAA had to cancel some domestic routes including Jakarta-Padang, Jakarta-Batam and Jakarta-Makassar.
IAA currently flies from Jakarta to Bangkok, Singapore, and Kuala Lumpur, and from Bandung to Singapore and Kuala Lumpur. From Bali, IAA flies to Kuala Lumpur, Singapore, Bangkok and Perth.
Dharmadi said the airline was talking to the government about building a dedicated terminal at the Soekarno-Hatta Airport, Jakarta to enable the airline to integrate domestic and regional routes.
